INTERVIEW: Overkissed

The mysterious Overkissed is releasing his debut album on Mood of the Era. The sounds used in creating the 4-track "PORN CUTS" EP are waves of pure delight, each track having its own vibe from beginning to end. The artist uses solid frequencies of analog sound to create a theme that is best described as fun and mischievous. Pamper your inner epicurean with these deep and sensual rhythms.

We have had the pleasure of speaking with Overkissed and this has been the result.

What was the first thing that attracted you to the world of electronic music?

When I was little I always loved messing around with the mixer in my father's bar and trying to mix tracks that were my childhood fave musical artists like Fatboy Slim, Daft Punk, Groove Armada. Back then it was all old good records of my childhood and was enjoyed listening to and buying different artists' works and compilation albums.

Do you remember any album or concert that has changed everything?

When I attend to Amsterdam Dance Event in 2015 it changed many things off for me when that was the first time I could witness many of my inspirational DJs and producers played and I was attending from venue to venue to catch every bit of it.

Since you got into this professionally, what did you miss the most nationally, internationally and on the contrary, what helped you the most to grow, even to believe in yourself?

I missed being out with friends either nationally or internationally mostly my time in London because this is what I like to spend my free time with. However, on the other side, I learned a lot about myself during these hard times and tried to come up with it with my music and improve myself on bringing the sound playing in my head to the real.

How is the music scene living in your city with this murky pandemic situation?

After the pandemic, it all shut down, during that time I was in London, and my life after the pandemic has been very calm and spend time at the home producing stuff, but slowly it is getting back to normal worldwide thankfully and feeling like there is light at the end of the tunnel.

What are your favorite places to hang out in the city?

Since now I am back in my hometown Istanbul I spend my time with my friends and family here. I love Istanbul and the vibe here, there are many local gems all over the city whether art side or in nature. So whenever I feel like going out in the city I like to do whatever with the company of either friends or family.

Have you had time to focus on making music, spending time with your family, or planning future projects?

Definitely so, and the situation made me focus on my stuff more. Maybe that was not what I would wish but in any case, you try to make the situations fit in your ways.

How was your last project born?

It came as I was experiencing as usual. I was not looking for making this EP but some consecutive days I found some vocal samples that two people talking to each other and it was enough to come up with 4 different songs that could come together as a piece of work.

What do you want to convey in this work? What is the concept behind?

The EP started as a fun project I liked along the way. So I want to direct this energy into the audience and have fun whilst listening.

As for your studio, what is your setup currently made of?

I am producing and mixing in the box and do not have any analog gears at the moment but soon I am going to invest in them to build my arsenal.

What's the one team you'll never get rid of, no matter what?

I love my Adam speakers I think my ears got used to them nicely and probably they will stay with me forever.

What would you say is the definition of your sound?

Sensual and groovy as it started but who knows what this direction will be?

What was the last record store you visited and what did you get out there?

Last time I was in a record store I got to Rough Trade East. I like the vibe there and the in-store gigs were amazing. I got Arca’s ‘KiCk i’ last time I was there.
