INTERVIEW: NODEN presents Last Night

Joining us on Last Future we welcome Noden. We have a good natter about their music and life, and other things too!

What was the first thing that attracted you to the world of electronic music?

Probably somewhere between the first LCD Soundsystem record, and some of the early Fabric Mix Series Albums – all borrowed of my mate’s brother; and listened to while driving round Essex at night. They just sounded “proper” compared to everything else I’d heard before; really exciting records, and (especially with the Fabric mixes) a window into a type of music I’d basically never heard before.

Do you remember any album or concert that has changed everything?

Hard to say; maybe a holiday where I ended going to We Love Sundays at Space years ago. I remember coming back home after and thinking “right; I want to start making records”. The stuff they were playing had a bit more soul to it than what I’d heard in England up to that point.

Since you got into this professionally, what helped you the most to grow as an artist?

I’d say it was meeting Dave and starting to make records together. He gets things done; I prevaricate endlessly. Ying and yang right.

How is the music scene in your city?

Still good; but needs people to keep going out and supporting it.

What are your favorite places to hang out in the city?

Get yourself down to AAJA radio in Deptford for a few pints and solid tunes. From there; onwards to wherever you like.

Have you had time to focus on making music, spending time with your family, or planning future projects during this past year of lockdowns?

I think we hit a point last year during the big lockdown where we were getting into “what is the point of anything anymore” territory, but getting to get out and start playing to people again over the summer has sorted us right out.

How was your last project born?

We wanted to make something a bit more chilled out than the last record; I heard that sample and knew it was the one.

What do you want to convey in this work? What is the concept behind it?

Rumbling and Rolling

As for your studio, what is your setup currently made of?

Pretty minimal. We work mostly “in the box” but have a few bits of analogue gear we like to run stuff through. To be honest; our recent (and long overdue) monitor upgrade is the thing that I’m currently most excited about.

What's the one bit of kit you'll never get rid of, no matter what?

A few old BOSS guitar pedals. Running audio through those is hours of fun. Chorus makes everything sound better.

What would you say is the definition of your sound?

All over the place

What was the last record store you visited and what did you get out there?

Phonica Records London – Sylvester – You Make Me Feel (Mighty Real) (Soulwax For Despacio Remix).
