INTERVIEW: Joey Mercedes




Joey Mercedes is a New York-based DJ/producer whose previous releases include an album on Spanish label Lowsounds in 2020, as well as a number of self-released tracks via Bandcamp. joining the toucan Sound familiar with his latest offering, Mercedes joins label friends and family Brandon Markell Holmes, Robert PM, Red Velvet Papi and Lyric Christian for a standout release packed with funky house collaborations.


Leading the EP, 'It Goes On' sees Mercedes and label boss Robert PM creating lush soundscapes and chunky drums, providing the foundation for Brandon Markell Holmes' smooth vocal performance. Next is 'St.

Tropez', which sees Holmes' delivering a combination of singing and spoken word over a bouncy house track with pumping kicks, groovy sax and rattling percussion, before 'Ardor (Interlude)' brings dreamy pads and a dense arrangement and evolving.


'Perplexed' features New York-based rapper, singer-songwriter and producer Red Velvet Papi and is a vocal house production with crooked synths and bouncy drums. 'Fulton' follows the same trajectory, bringing together Holmes and New York singer-songwriter Lyric Christian in an irresistible and immaculately produced house jam. Additional instrumental versions of 'It Goes On', 'Perplexed' and 'Fulton' are included to complete the release.


Brooklyn Toucan Sounds is a label at the forefront of emerging sounds and artists based out of You Too Can Woo Studios in New York. Since its inception in 2018, the label has been championing acts like musclecars, Haruka Salt, Brandon Markell Holmes, and more.


We have had the pleasure of interviewing Joey Mercedes and this has been the result.


How would you present your work to someone who doesn't know you?

Dusty, atmospheric, vocal driven house music


And your last job? Where is it born? And where do you want to lead?

Software. New York. I'm now in electronic space/defense. To the moon!


What message would you like to convey to the public?

Find a hobby, develop it into a passion.


How was your last project born?

Sent some demos to Toucan Sounds, they listened and reached out to me. The rest is histoy.


What do you want to convey in this work? What is the concept behind?

That music is an outlet for feelings that can't be put into words. I enjoy various types of house and techno

and wanted to mix all of the sounds that I'm currently inspired by.

What is the one instrument you would never get rid of, no matter what?

What was the last record store you visited? And what did you salvage from there?

Bruised Apple, NY, "Environments" meditation series.

Do you have hope for the future of music? How would you like the future of the music industry to be?

I do. Hopefully talent will be more recognized over image.


Can you reveal some future projects to us?

Currently working on my next project.


What makes you happy?

Nature, spending time with family and friends. being present and centered when there are so many distractions as of late.
