INTERVIEW: Ian Christopher

The last future have the pleasure of talking to Ian Christopher ahead of his "Agave" record that is just hitting the shops now.

What was the first thing that attracted you to the world of electronic music?

My high-school girlfriend took me to a rave on South Beach when I was 16. I had never heard real underground techno and house until this moment - and it hooked me right then and there. Not the partying or the "scene", it was all about the music.

Do you remember any album or concert that has changed everything?

I could say the first rave I went to changed everything, but what lured me into DJ'ing was when I went to the first-ever Ultra Music Festival. This was a much smaller event that took place on the actual sands of South Beach...Paul Van Dyk, Seb Fontaine, Steve Lawler, Josh Wink, Union Jack, Rabbit in the Moon. Need I say more.

Since you got into this professionally, what helped you the most to grow as an artist?

Piano lessons!

How is the music scene in your city?

I live in Miami, Florida...when it comes to electronic music, there is no shortage of amazing clubs, festivals and concerts.

What are your favorite places to hang out in the city?

ATV Records is a great spot in Downtown Miami.

Have you had time to focus on making music, spending time with your family, or planning future projects during this past year of lockdowns?

Yes, fortunately, I have made the time. I crave the time to sit down and work on music without interruption, so I follow a strict schedule for work, family and play time.

How was your last project born?

One Friday night, I was sketching out a few tracks while drinking some of my favorite tequila with a a friend. Hence the title, Agave.

What do you want to convey in this work? What is the concept behind it?

These 3 tracks were produced over a weekend and ended up being a mini showcase of my three favorite styles - acid breaks, house, and tech house.

As for your studio, what is your setup currently made of?

Ableton running on 15" Mac Book Pro, with Abelton Push 2, Native Instruments Komplete Kontrol Keyboard, and KRK Rokit Studio Speakers.

What's the one bit of kit you'll never get rid of, no matter what?

My two black Technics 1200MK2.

What would you say is the definition of your sound?

Soulful, grooving and driving.

What was the last record store you visited and what did you get out there?

Amoeba Music in Los Angeles. I bought Daft Punks last album, Random Access Memories, on vinyl.
