INTERVIEW: Hard Ton

The chameleons who redefine the Hard Ton genre are back at Schrödinger's Box with their own brand of acid house disco style. Bigger is Better, a double EP album, has all the depravity and drama you'd expect from these disruptors. “Waking Up The House” melds applause, cowbells and vocals over a melting melody. Bold, punchy keys are central to "The Right Thing," the lyrics spiraling skyward as a line of bitter acid pushes the track into the sweaty pit of the club. That TB303 goes into overdrive for the wonderfully demonic hedonism of "Bypass My Love." Two-Step Jack gets a voice thanks to Josh Caffe's breathy words as he rains down the fanfare. The low-key "Let Yourself Go" is a distant cousin to the raunchy, brutal "I Know A Bitch," the heavy bass and cutting samples at the end reminiscent of Chicago basement thugs.

We have had the pleasure of interviewing them and this has been the result.

Hi guys, It’s a pleasure to have you on board. The European summer is here, What are your plans for it? Hello! And thanks for having us! The Italian summer seems to be as hot as Britney on her wedding dress! Plans? Shows, ice creams and holidays!

When was the first time you meet and how did you end up making music together?

We met on a bear chat (you know, a chat for big guys like me…) and instead of talking ‘bout kinky stuff, we immediately found out our mutual passion for music, even if we were coming from different backgrounds, me being an heavy metal singer, and Mauro being a house dj. But it took time (years!) before we came up with the idea of Hard Ton, in which combining our love for music, art, pop culture and flamboyant costumes (I was born in Venice, the city of Carnival, and I guess this explains a lot, right?) What can you tell us about this new Ep ‘Bigger Is Better’?

It’s actually two EPs, pt. 01 and pt. 02, and it’s our sophomore album! And guess what? We are excited to release it!

Why ‘Bigger Is Better’?

Why Bigger Is Better? Hey darling, just look at a picture of me and find out the answer! And how about Schrödinger's Box? What can you tell us about the label and its way of working?

We have previously worked with S’Box for a collaboration with dear acid friends Snuff Crew, and we immediately felt like home, always having been given a lot of artistic freedom and consideration by Ian.

Let’s get nerdy. What hardware and software have you worked with? When you produce... what is your work criteria?

Oh yes, let’s get nerdy! The list is actually pretty long, spanning from classic pieces like the TB303, SH101, Juno 106, MS20, MonoPoly etc, to newest gear like the OP1, the whole Pocket Operator serie, IK UNO synth, but even some uncool mobile app! And of course pedals and drum machines. But in our opinion what marks the difference from our first album, Party Hard Ton, is that Bigger is based on the idea of embracing the machines’ mistakes, of getting lost into improvisations and long jam sessions, of turning a casually recorded background noise into a sound, of enjoying the unexpected instead of programming what you have in mind. The inspiration at the same time flows through the machines and comes from the machines.

Well, before saying goodbye, we would like you to tell us what things you have prepared for the near future?

A video will be out very soon, we’ll be promoting the album through our shows, there will be a remix EP of the album with reworks from Posthuman, Larionov, Nightwave, Rude 66 and Acid Jerks. Bigger is better, and I never have enough!
