INTERVIEW: DAAY

DAAY was formed in London in 2019 by Alex Barty-King and has taken many forms, currently comprising of a 6 piece band who regularly rehearse in North and South London.

The first 3 singles were released with an entirely different band behind Barty-King, now equipped with a whole new line up Barty-King aims to challenge more adult themes of philosophic enquiry as the band moves forward.

‘Forever’ is a song about trying to understand what ‘forever' actually means if it's true that we do exist as infinite consciousness as according to most religions and esoteric practices.

Another branch into experimental alternative rock ‘Forever’ moves us forward from the previous single ‘Dream Kit’ in a way that forces us to reconcile with the situation of our being after we’ve woken up.

It uses ideas from jazz, pop and psychedelic music and is influenced by artists like John Grant, Tom Waits and Primal Scream.

We have had the pleasure of interviewing DAAY and this has been the result.

What was the first thing that attracted you to the world of electronic music?

Although I think I only touch on electronic music in Forever by using a drum machine and a synth, the idea that as humans we've moved into an electronic space with our music is captivating and so much music has been influenced by this ability in the last 50 to 60 years it's incredible.

Do you remember any album or concert that has changed everything?

Daftpunk - Homework, I used to listen while doing late night art homework. My first concert was Cooper Temple Clause which knocked me about a bit.

Since you got into this professionally, what did you miss the most nationally, internationally and on the contrary, what helped you the most to grow, even to believe in yourself?

I don't really understand what you mean, I earn next to nothing as a pop musician, but the thing that helps me grow and believe in myself is seeing as much art and culture as possible and general mind exploration in the form of well-being in all it's forms.

How is the music scene living in your city with this murky pandemic situation?

Crawling back with acts more exciting and better than ever before.

What are your favorite places to hang out in the city?

Probably green spaces

Have you had time to focus on making music, spending time with your family, or planning future projects?

Yes barely

How was your last project born?

It's barely out the womb but initially when I was living in Canada I got my first pangs to start a music project from scratch

What do you want to convey in this work? What is the concept behind?

The concept behind DAAY is concrete. It's a celebration of the day time, which is where everything happens. It's a ceremony to inspire people into action. It's intentionally vague in order to increase it's scope for elaboration and exploration, just like the day time itself.

As for your studio, what is your setup currently made of?

I can't afford a studio at present but I'm looking into it.

What's the one team you'll never get rid of, no matter what?

I don't have a team. The band?

What would you say is the definition of your sound?

In progress.

What was the last record store you visited and what did you get out there?
