We interviewed Audun from Funboys. Funboys is a trio from Australia along with AckerMan from Israel, who will release the song "Funboys & AckerMan - No Man Around" at the 4th edition of Various's Belly Dance Services worldwide.
What was the first thing that attracted you to the world of electronic music?
First electro breakdance cassettes, and then bang, Moroder!
Do you remember any record or concert that made you see everything differently?
Seeing Gary Numan on TV playing a synthesizer with just one finger, making sounds we've never heard before.
Since you got into this professionally, what did you miss nationally, internationally? And what helped you the most to grow, even to believe in yourself?
I never really missed anything, so many great things happening around the world, but for us it's always been about reflecting our references and our own experiences, and trying to channel that into something that has a unique sound.
How did you decide to embark on your latest works?
We dig the collision of ideas by doing collaborations, 1 + 1 = 3.
What hardware and software does each track work with?
We use original hardware as a starting point, but also organic instrumentation. 'No Man Around' began as the unlikely combination of a pre-Ottoman Turkish beat and a 1960s American TV ad about changing car tires.
What do you admire most about your works?
That's for everyone else to have an opinion, but we hope it sounds refreshingly weird, and not like anyone else's.
What do you want to convey with your works?
Make people dance with the unknown.
What do you admire most about the label? What recording artists are you interested in?
We explore how Belly Dance Services reaches out across the globe and manages to pull together a widely scattered compilation of artists while keeping a red thread running through it all. Those kinds of healing skills take time to acquire.
How are you living the music scene in your city with this murky pandemic situation?
DJing regularly is key to keeping your pulse up to date.
What are your favorite places to hang out in the city?
In the studio and in abandoned car parks, so much space.
Have you had time to focus on making music, spending time with your family, or planning future projects?
Covid was a great opportunity to buckle down and reaffirm the core of our intentions. We've done a lot and are gearing up for a year or two of releases as dance floors around the world are opening up again.
Do you have any final words of wisdom?
Sometimes it's nice to have a few seasoned travelers in the room.
