Following a busy run of singles and remixes in 2025 under his new Synnhaven alias, producer and photographer Nick Garcia reveals the first extended body of work under the moniker: Hauntology. Set for release on June 26, the six-track EP marks a definitive shift toward the layered and atmospheric sounds that define his new creative chapter.
The rollout begins with the May 8th release of "Finally," a heartfelt tribute to transformative love, followed quickly by the EP’s second single, "Cypress," on May 22. Named for the evocative landscapes that mirror Synnhaven’s sonic palette, "Cypress" further explores the project's signature blend of dub-techno textures and lush, saturated synths. This aesthetic serves as a broader introduction to the EP’s core concept of “hauntology”—a paradoxical nostalgia for a future that never quite arrived. Merging organic field recordings with shimmering, reverb-soaked guitar, Garcia evokes a soundscape that is simultaneously nostalgic and futuristic. Tape hiss and organic spaces add a hazy consistency to these sonic elements.
Tracks like “Lumen” and “Bonsai” epitomize the approach; the former pairs washed-out vocal leads with a deep, pulsating sub-bass to conjure an ethereal, ghostly resonance, while the latter utilizes shimmering harmonic layers to evoke a phantom-like presence—as if broadcasting a melody from a radio station that ceased to exist decades ago. “Bokeh,” named for the aesthetic blur of out-of-focus light, explores a moodier, more percussive side of the project’s sonic palette.
To solidify this tactile sonic identity, Garcia retreated to Infinite Power studios for an intensive two-day session with analog obsessive and cult legend Matia Simovich of INHALT. There, the EP underwent a meticulous process of sonic refinement, running every track through a Neve 8424 console and a curated selection of vintage outboard gear. This collaborative polishing stage was essential to achieving the project's signature warmth—a high-fidelity saturation that grounds the spectral themes in a physical, weighted reality. Simovich also helped capture the EP’s closing track, “Haze.” A solo guitar piece conceived by Garcia over a decade ago, the track had resisted numerous prior recording attempts until finding its definitive form during these sessions.
Garcia, a veteran of the pre-pandemic deep house scene who has shared stages with icons like Bonobo, SOPHIE, Jacques Greene, and Matthew Dear, conceived Synnhaven as a means to reframe his relationship with art in the social media age. The music is inextricably linked to his visual work; the EP's aesthetic is anchored by images captured on his vintage, family-heirloom Leica. Fans can experience the Hauntology era live this summer, as Synnhaven brings his deep, hypnotic sets to the Forest House Art Car at EDC Las Vegas in May and the intimate Sequoia Sunrise gathering in July.
