The original 1990 classic remains an all-time Balearic favourite

The Grid is Soft Cell's Dave Ball and electronic maestro Richard Norris. They formed in the late 1980s at the dawn of acid house, and 'Floatation' was their breakthrough single. It instantly became a classic Ibiza sound and was featured in the cult documentary, A Short Film About Chilling.

To mark its 35th anniversary, the original has now been remixed by renowned Balearic tastemaker Mark Barrott and established UK talent, Made By Pete. Barrott was the founder of the renowned International Feel label and curator of the superb La Torre compilations. He is a contemporary champion of all things downtempo, blissed out, ambient, and horizontal, marked by Pitchfork as ‘the Master of Sunset Music’. He brings his vast wealth of experience and understanding to five fantastic mixes, which have already been getting support from the likes of David Holmes, Jon Sa Trinxa, and Phil Mison. Made by Pete is a London-born and raised artist, producer, and songwriter who has been a mainstay on Damian Lazarus’ influential Crosstown Rebels imprint. He heads up the Life In Colour label and is a long-standing resident at Blue Marlin in Ibiza, while also playing across the world. He has released tunes like ‘Fires’, ‘In My Head’ and the massive hit ‘Horizon Red’, gaining plaudits from DJs and media alike, including two Essential New Tunes on Pete Tong on BBC Radio 1 show.

The original version kicks off and remains a timeless gem with laidback drums and layers of immersive synths that break like gentle waves on a beach. The mystic flute lead, patter of toms, and seductive spoken words all heighten the sense of beachy Ibiza bliss. Mark Barrott's Return to Sa Trinxa Remix references one of the White Isle's most legendary music spots across eight minutes of majestic, dreamy downbeat.

The God's Cinema Sunset Re-Imagination Mix is impossibly pure and cathartic with glistening synth ripples and sweeping Hans Zimmer strings soundtracking an idyllic float out to sea. The Ibiza Sunrise '90 Re-Work is a beatless ambient soundscape with celestial melodic charm reminiscent of Global Communication at their peak, the Somnolent Reprise is another ambient version with ascending chords and bird calls soothing the soul, whilst the Slo-Motion Reprise is even more sparse with just subtly shapeshifting chords keeping you afloat in a clear blue sky.

Made by Pete’s remix of 'Flotation' adds a little extra bite and drive to the drum breaks, which remain light but move on with late-night energy. The chords up top are evocative and unfurl in gentle sweeps under cosmic FX, while rubbery bass and soft acid all add to the journey.

This remix release marks the beginning of new activity from The Grid with plans for a ‘Best of’ compilation, further singles and a new album in the pipeline.

The Grid's Flotation Remixes come out on Skint. Mark Barrott’s Return to Sa Trinxa remix arrives on August 29th, followed by his God’s Cinema Sunset Re-imagination mix on September 12th and his Somnolent Reprise on September 26th. Made by Pete’s remixes will arrive on October 10th.
