REVIEW: The Irrepressibles - Superheroes

There are artists who to go beyond their sound, they have to get rid of their original name and create another, but then there are the others, who to go further, they have to meet again, to create a sound whose starting point is not born both the attempt to cross borders and to recover them. This is the case of The Irrepressibles, who has just released Superheroes.

The Irrepressibles is the creative side of vocalist, songwriter, artist and producer Jamie Irrepressible. He has already released 3 critically acclaimed albums: Mirror Mirror 2010, Nude 2012, Superheroes 2020 and two EPs, From the Circus to the Sea 2009 (PT1, PT2 ) and Nudes 2014. Jamie is also collaborating with electronic artists such as Royksopp (The Inevitable End 2014), ionnalee (Dunes of Sand 2018) and more to come in 2022.

Originally from Baron Moors and the Victorian seaside town of Scarborough, North Yorkshire, and born into the working class, Jamie began listening to music in his head as a child, initially composing on keyboards or for the school orchestra. He concentrated most of his life on creating music that expressed the uniqueness of homosexual love in a way that inspired connection, and therefore became an activist through music, and eventually formed The Irrepressibles in 2002 while studying music at University.

In 2020, The Irrepressibles song In This Shirt went viral on Tik Tok and a new and younger audience discovered Jamie's music, reaching more than 70 million views on Spotify. After a period living in Berlin, the third album Superheroes saw Jamie Irrepressible direct his project towards electronic music. He is now launching a set and soon a tour, where the band will consolidate their sound.

Superheroes is a serious job, care is taken to start it up and not return to reality until it is finished: the headphones are like the oxygen cylinder that allows you to dive to the bottom of this great sonic rotation, this cosmic . . orbit, and being there in a state of hypnotic fascination. In this world where speed is desperately sought and attention deficit is so high, such a record will be misunderstood among many people, even dismissed as really important. But you just have to have the patience and the desire to stop, to breathe, to sink into it, to stay there as long as possible and to admire its interior. Accordingly, this is an eclectic suite that veers from the weird funk strut of ‘Dominance’ to breezy techno (‘Let Go’) and soft, ’80s-inflected synthpop (‘Submission’) without missing a beat.

Marking a pivotal moment in the project, The Irrepressiblessolidifies its place within the field of dance music. The result is this work: the vinyl edition of Superheroes is as experimental as it is intense and addictive, that takes over oneself like sweet poison, while progressively transporting us, as few producers with a certain fluidity are willing to do. We do not know what the future holds, but we do know that this record is testimony to a turbulent and uncertain present, which will remain in our memory forever. For work like this, we can continue to fight for a better future.

A whole lesson, a way of understanding not only music, but culture, beyond the precariousness that currently prevails, as something expendable, as if music, books or art did not save us. Forget for a moment about this magmatic present, close your eyes and let yourself be carried away by each of the notes that The Irrepressibles offers you.
