With its 43rd release, MYR Records continues refining an identity that sits comfortably between club functionality and melodic sophistication. Max Hefele's debut for the label, Call Me EP, feels less like an exercise in nostalgia than a conversation between generations of dance music. Rather than simply borrowing from early house aesthetics, Hefele reshapes familiar rhythmic language through the expansive lens of contemporary melodic techno.
The title track immediately establishes the EP's personality. "Call Me" thrives on rolling percussion, punchy grooves and subtle vocal touches that recall the optimistic spirit of early-'90s dancefloors without becoming trapped in retro revivalism. "Better Day of Life" introduces a warmer emotional palette, allowing luminous synth work to breathe over patient rhythms that gradually unfold into an uplifting peak-time moment.
The record's most intriguing cut may be "Rabbit in the Cage," where restrained sequencing and evolving textures create hypnotic tension through repetition instead of explosive drops. It's a track built for long transitions and immersive DJ sets. Closing piece "Storm and Struggle" increases the kinetic pressure, delivering driving drums and soaring melodic motifs that give the EP a satisfying sense of resolution.
Throughout its four tracks, Hefele demonstrates an understanding that melody works best when supported by disciplined groove. Call Me EP succeeds because it never forces its emotional ambitions, allowing atmosphere and rhythm to coexist naturally. MYR Records adds another polished release to a catalogue increasingly defined by understated quality rather than fashionable excess.
