INTERVIEW: Schott & Alicea

Volt EP marks the debut collaboration between Schott and Alicea on the newly founded Munich Techno label, Telur. This driving, energetic, and atmospheric channels release Detroit-inspired sounds with a fast-forward intensity.

Volt EP delivers three boomy, hypnotic tracks that capture the raw essence of Techno, crafted for deep immersion on the dancefloor.

We have had the pleasure of interviewing them and this has been the result.

Your debut on Telur Records is making waves. How does it feel to be part of such an exciting new label?

Schott & Alicea: We’ve had the idea of founding a label for a long time, and we’re thrilled to finally bring it to life. It’s exciting to work behind the scenes, become independent, and release our own music. We manage everything ourselves—from the cover artwork to coordinating social media and connecting directly with our fans. Plus, we get to decide what gets released, both for our music and for other artists. This creative freedom is incredibly motivating. And we’ve learned so much along the way. I can only recommend it to anyone passionate about making music. Life is about trying new things, and being able to express yourself creatively is a true joy!

Flowing Dream has a unique blend of raw energy and dreamy soundscapes. What was the creative process behind it?

Alicea: For me, it’s all about the chords, paired with effects like reverb, echo, and phaser, which create that warm, atmospheric sound. I created the chord using wavetable in Ableton. Dub Techno is the perfect fusion of Techno elements and ambient influences, and I absolutely love it! I wanted the kick drum to sound hard and transport enough energy, while the melody remains playful and dreamy—a beautiful combination.

How do you incorporate innovation into your music without losing its emotional core?Alicea: Honestly, I can’t judge how innovative my sound is. It relies on traditional Techno tools and existing genres. I’m still at the beginning of my journey as a producer, but I already feel a special connection to this track. I have many visions for the future, where I want to explore more genres and create truly innovative sounds. That’s also what our label will focus on. Our first joint EP, Volt, which will be released on December 27, reflects a variety of sound influences since we produced the tracks together.

What inspired the high-energy direction of Volt EP?

Schott & Alicea: We love going to clubs, dancing, and feeling the raw energy of Techno on our skin. We wanted to create an EP that follows our shared vision. All three tracks carry different energy. While Chapulines has an almost playful vibe, Volt is a track we love to play in sweaty underground clubs—it drives the crowd and motivates them to give it their all. Hunter feels like a thunderstorm; it radiates a softer energy that’s not threatening but still incorporates slightly atmospheric Dub elements.

Can you share any creative techniques or tools you used to craft the EP’s sound?Schott & Alicea: We experimented with a lot of different techniques, including jam sessions. The main sounds always come from analog gear that we recorded, but we also used and manipulated samples. There’s no single formula we follow. Here’s a funny story though: During our trip to Mexico this year, we recorded loud grasshoppers with our field recorder. We were always searching for the next interesting field recording! When we tried to incorporate the chirping sound into a track, we quickly realized the frequency spectrum wasn’t broad enough—unfortunately, we had to leave it out. But the name stuck! That’s how Chapulines (Spanish for “grasshoppers”) got its name.

Your music has been described as a "journey." How do you translate personal experiences into sonic textures?

Schott & Alicea: The Volt EP came directly after our trip to Mexico. We gathered ideas not only in the clubs but also in the streets of Mexico and wanted to channel those experiences into our music. It’s a shared creative project. We just sat down and started producing without much discussion beforehand about what exactly we wanted to create. We know each other so well as a couple that we don’t need many words to understand what the other person feels or likes.

Collaborating with Schott must have brought fresh perspectives. How did his style complement yours?

Alicea: Schott has much more experience as a producer—more than ten years, I think. I’ve learned so much from him and am following in his footsteps. He has mastered analog tools like no one else, and I’m truly grateful for everything he’s taught me. On the other hand, I bring my years of experience as a DJ to the table. I’m very genre-fluid, with an interest in different Techno subgenres, as well as Hardgroove and Trance. That opens up new musical perspectives for us in our joint productions.

How do you see the role of labels like Telur in shaping the future of techno?

Alicea & Schott: There are many large and well-known labels that have been guiding lights for us as DJs and producers. They’ve done incredible work, and it’s admirable how they either adapt to modern circumstances—or sometimes don’t. We want to create a label that’s full of love and passion and comes directly from the Munich scene. We want to build something for our chosen home and reflect the Sound of Munich, which was already celebrated worldwide in the 1980s. We’re starting small and will see where the next few years take us.

With techno evolving rapidly, where do you see the genre heading in the next few years?Alicea & Schott: Techno is currently at the peak of its popularity. It’s celebrated worldwide and has even overtaken EDM. After Covid, the genre exploded further; it became the music of a new generation—angry, full of energy, and ready to dance and party again. However, we can already see new trends emerging. In Germany, for example, Trance is making a comeback. We believe Techno will move back into the underground, which wouldn’t be such a bad thing. It would allow slower, more atmospheric music to have more space again. We’ve all felt the trend towards fast, hard Techno recently, but it’s entirely possible that minimalistic and slower sounds will return soon.

What can we expect from you in the near future? Any upcoming projects or ideas you’re excited about?

Schott & Alicea: We’re planning to release our current EP on December 27, and then we’ll dive right back into the creative process for more releases. But first, it’s time for a short breather. Founding a label is an intense process, even if it’s a lot of fun. We’re highly motivated and already on the lookout for up-and-coming producers and other exciting artists to release on our label. We can feel that 2025 is going to be an exciting year!
