Moroccan electronic music pioneers Amine K and FNX Omar join forces for Foul Gnawa, a powerful new EP landing April 8 on Izil Recordings, the label founded by Amine K. Rooted in Afro house but deeply infused with Moroccan musical identity, the release sees two long-standing innovators reconnect with the sound they helped shape years before it became a global movement.
Long before Afro house surged onto international dancefloors, Amine K, FNX Omar and fellow Moroccan trailblazer Mr. ID were already weaving the textures of North African music into electronic production. Their early work helped lay the foundation for what has since become known as Moroccan Afro house, blending traditional influences, organic instrumentation and hypnotic rhythms with contemporary club energy.
At the heart of the EP is the title track “Foul Gnawa”, a fresh rework of a record originally produced by Amine K nearly fifteen years ago. The new version breathes renewed life into the track while honoring its roots. Quirky guitar riffs dance over rolling Afro house grooves, while soulful vocal flourishes add warmth and movement, creating a vibrant meeting point between heritage and modern dancefloor sensibilities.
The release also features three distinctive remixes from the artists themselves, each offering a unique interpretation of the original.
Amine K delivers a driving, club-focused remix that raises the tempo and amplifies the track’s dancefloor energy, leaning into percussive momentum and peak-time intensity. Mr. ID takes the record into darker territory, layering pulsing synth stabs and deeper tones to create a more hypnotic, late-night atmosphere. FNX Omar strips things back with a groovier, more minimal approach, built around marching basslines and crisp percussion that give the track a raw, rolling feel.
Together, the four versions form a cohesive yet varied EP that celebrates both the history and ongoing evolution of Moroccan Afro house. Foul Gnawa stands as a reminder of the genre’s early architects, artists who were incorporating Moroccan elements into electronic music long before it was considered a trend.
