Todays interview on The last future welcomes «The Balek Band». Lets dig into their motivations and musical ideas and see what we find out.
What was the first thing that attracted you to the world of electronic music?
We are 4 musicians with quite different backgrounds. Ludo (Guitar) and Vinz (drums and keys) come from a traditional music academy, while Sam (bass) and myself Vidock (Synths, FX, Electronics), have a rather DIY music culture. I personally came to electronic music over a decade ago, through detroit techno and analog music production.
Nous sommes 4 musiciens avec des parcours assez différents. Ludo (guitare) et vinz (clavier et percussion) sont issue du conservatoire alors que Sam (bass) et moi même, Vidock (Synth, FX, Electronic), sommes issu d’une culture plus DIY et autodidacte de la musique. Pour ma part qui gère la partie électronique de notre musique, je suis venu à la musique électronique via les machines analogiques et la musique techno de détroit.
Do you remember any album or concert that has changed everything?
Brian Eno & David Byrne’s “My Life in the bush of ghosts” or funkier stuff such as Curtis Mayfield’s “If There's A Hell Below We're All Going To Go” are good examples that shaped our musical landscape.
En ce qui concerne la couleurs musicale du groupe, l’albums de Brian Eno et David Byrne “My life in the bush of ghosts” ou des choses plus funky comme “If There's A Hell Below We're All Going To Go” de Curtis Mayfield ont façonné notre univers.
Since you got into this professionally, what helped you the most to grow as an artist?
By far : the crew, friends, musicians and all the others with who we worked along the way. In music, in art, in life, working with people is essential. Those working with independent labels, technicians, dansers and listeners, family and friends, they all play a major part in the making of our music, in our will to work hard to get the best out of our creativity. Among those, Abstract and Beauty and the Beat families have been decisive.
Ce qui nous a le plus aidé c’est le collectif, les amis et musiciens avec qui nous avons collaboré durant notre chemin. En musique et plus largement en art et dans beaucoup d'aspects de la vie, le collectif est important. Que ce soit ceux qui œuvrent pour les labels indépendants, les techniciens, les danseurs et auditeurs, la famille ou les amis, tous jouent un grand rôle dans le développement de notre musique, dans notre inspiration et dans notre détermination à travailler dur pour livrer la plus belle part de notre créativité. Parmi eux la famille Abstrack, Abstrack Records et Beauty & The Beat ont été déterminants.
How is the music scene in your city?
In Nantes (western France), the musical scene is quite developed and is thriving upon a friendly vibe among all crews and independent venues. There’s a lot to see, hear or dance to, and everyone is getting along great and working together : we’re very lucky.
Unfortunately, working the way we wish inside the city can be complicated : venues often find themselves in difficult situations with local public authorities.
A Nantes (ouest de la france), la scène musicale est très développée et bénéficie d’une entente amicale entre tous les collectifs et lieux indépendant. Il y a beaucoup de choses à voir, écouter, danser et tout le monde s’entend très bien et collabore, c’est une véritable chance !
Malheureusement, il est plus difficile d'exister comme on le souhaiterait dans l’espace public ou en tout cas dans la ville. Les patrons de lieux ont souvent à faire à la même problématique de dialogue avec les pouvoirs publics…
What are your favorite places to hang out in the city?
Well, there’s our friends of Bras de Fer running this great place : they are wine makers and cellarmen and own a bar where they put on shows, exhibitions and parties. They’re part of the family, they’re very generous and highly motivated by giving and sharing with Nantes people. Il y a le bar de nos amis Bras De Fer ! Ils sont vignerons, caviste et possèdent donc aussi un bar dans lequel ils organisent des concerts et expos. C’est notre famille, ils sont d’une grande générosité et motivés par la volonté de donner et d’échanger avec les Nantais.
Have you had time to focus on making music, spending time with your family, or planning future projects during this past year(s) of lockdowns?
Our first album “Médecines” was conceived inbetween two lockdowns, in the countryside. It was a very special time, giving us the possibility of questioning what really matters. Beside love, family and nature, it is clearly impossible for us to live without music. That’s who the record is called “Médecines”, it was conceived as a cure for our minds and for everyone’s.
Notre premier album “Médecines” à été conçu entre deux lockdowns, à la campagne. Ce fut une période particulière, propice pour nous à nous questionner sur l’essentiel. Outre l’amour, la famille, la nature, il est impossible pour nous de vivre sans musique. C’est pour cela que nous avons appelé notre “Médecines”. Cet album est conçu comme un remède de l’esprit pour nous et pour les autres.
What do you want to convey in this work? What is the concept behind it?
Our idea is to go through a large share of our musical influences, while working on defining our own craft. We started off with 9 demos recorded by Vidock, along with a few inspiring tracks. Once locked in the studio, the magic took on.
L’idée pour ce premier long format est de parcourir l’ensemble des esthétiques musicales qui nous composent tout en travaillant à établir cette "pâte" (patte, sinon ça se bouffe ;) qui est la nôtre.
On est donc partie de 9 démos que Vidock à confectionné, accompagné de morceaux d’autres artistes qui nous semblaient inspirants. Puis, une fois enfermé dans le studio, la magie opère !
As for your studio, what is your setup currently made of?
Studios set-up is largely the same as the live one. Guitar, Bass, Yamaha DX7 for a retro touch, Nord keys for Jazz and organic vibes, lots of drums (congas, bongos, belles, ride and so on). On the electronic side we have a TR8S, a minilogue, digitakt, Blofeld… A lot of hardware staff, all recorded into a UAD and it’s plugins.
En studio on utilise grosso-modo les intruments que nous utilisons en live. Guitare, Basse, YamahaDX7 pour le côté rétro, Nord pour le côté jazz et organique, pas mal de percussions (congas, bongos, cloches, ride etc…). Puis côté électronique une TR8S, un minilogue, digitakt, Blofeld… Bref beaucoup de matériel harware, le tout enregistré avec une UAD accompagné de ses pulg in.
What's the one bit of kit you'll never get rid of, no matter what?
Hard to say : we save it all or burn along with it!
Ahah difficile de choisir, on sauve tout ou on brule avec notre set up !
What would you say is the definition of your sound?
If Bryan Eno and David Byrne met Marvin Gay in an acid dripping Manchester club, yet with a direct access to a Fort-de-France beach, our first record would probably be a great soundtrack to that night.
Si Bryan Eno et David Byrne avait rencontré Marvin Gay dans un night club coulant d’acid de Manchester donnant sur une plage de Fort-de-France, notre premier album à venir en aurait surement été la B.O, et notre live, leur incarnation.
What was the last record store you visited and what did you get out there?
Obviously local institution “Wood Records”, ran by the mighty Atemi, dear friend and family member. There’s no way around it if you’re a music lover in Nantes.
One of the last record purchased there and representing our sound would be : A Certain Ratio’s “ACR:EPR”
Le dernier record store visité était “Wood Records” de notre grand ami Atemi. Inévitable à Nantes pour tous les amoureux de la musique. Et parmis les derniers disques acheté la bas bien représentatif de notre son il y a A Certain Ratio “ACR:EPR”
