INTERVIEW: Sagans presents Coherence

This bio of Sagans has been generated by OpenAI GPT-3 and Codex:

The group known as the Sagans is made up of music artists, graphic designers, and AI researchers who create music and visual effects with the help of AI.

The group was formed in 2022 and consists of members from all over the world. The AI Collective is dedicated to creating new and innovative ways to create music and visual effects, and believes that artificial intelligence is the key to unlocking new creative possibilities, something that is truly unique and expressive.

We have had the pleasure of interviewing them and this has been the result.

What was the first thing that attracted you to the world of electronic music?

I grew up with Kid A by Radiohead. This album has been kind of a supernova in my brain. I understood for the first time that popular artists could do something interesting and unique while remaining accessible artists.

Do you remember any record or concert that made you see everything differently?

I have been personally really moved by the first records from Lorn. He can do something so dark and at the same time so powerful, it makes me sad but it gives me a lot of hope at the same time, this is a unique feeling.

Since you got into this professionally, what did you miss nationally, internationally? And what helped you the most to grow, even to believe in yourself?

“Coherence” is the first track ever released by this project. It has been a long technical journey to get the right people at the right time around the right kind of music and visuals, but I guess the right vision was there from the beginning and the result is exactly the one I had in mind. We are a fully digital project and I guess we see the world as a whole, we feel like this track and music video can makes you feel a very special emotion and we do hope that as many people will see it – but where, we don’t really care as long as long as the track resonates with the audience.

How did you decide to embark on your latest job?

I have done a few projects before this one. I used to compose some electronic tracks with a more distinct “pop” structure, I guess growing up gave me the confidence to try and do exactly what I have in mind without the fear of always belonging to something. Being limited by my own human capacities, I wanted to find a solution to push the artistic boundaries and the AI was the perfect solution to overcome this. Sagans has always been something I wanted to do but I didn’t know that I was able to do it. Working with AI has been a real enlightenment, kind of a superpower that I could slowly control.

How are you living the music scene in your city with this murky pandemic situation?

Covid has forced us to think about music creation in another way. I used to start music projects with the motivation of playing it live. With the current situation, I’m definitely taking the time to experiment and to propose something that does not necessarily need to go live one day, it can fully exist on its own. With Sagans, we are working on a fully digital approach, something that can exist virtually and still resonate with the audience.

What are your favorite places to hang out in the city?

In London, I love spending time in the old pubs where all generations are meeting, this is always a very genuine moment.

Have you had time to focus on making music, spending time with your family, or planning future projects?

It’s great that you’re mentioning family, as real life and real people are definitely the most important thing. We are making digital art to give some emotion to people, but there is no better moment than sharing real life moments with friends and family.

With Sagans, we want to have a lot of fun, do something never done before – involving a lot of AI research and a lot of experimentation. On the side we are also working with other music artists on their music videos. We don’t want to be a music project only, we want to create anything for anyone as long as there is a real meaning behind the work.

Do you have any final words of wisdom?

“imagination will often carry us to worlds that never were, but without it we go nowhere”
